pdfty's protect tool encrypts your PDF with a password using AES-256 — the standard used by banks and government. Anyone trying to open the file in Adobe, Preview, Foxit, or browsers will be prompted for the password.
Two passwords are supported: an open password (required to view) and an owner password (required to edit/print). Set one or both. Useful for sensitive contracts, financial reports, medical records, ID copies.
We never store your password — it's used to encrypt and immediately discarded. Files are deleted within 1 hour. We use pikepdf which is built on the audited QPDF library.

Type a strong password — minimum 8 characters with mix of letters, digits, symbols.
We encrypt server-side with AES-256. Takes a couple of seconds.
Save the protected file. Test it once before sharing.
There is no recovery. Without the password the file cannot be opened by anyone, including us.
