If you've ever downloaded an old mathematics textbook, a Soviet-era engineering manual, or a 19th-century monograph from a digital archive, chances are it arrived as a .djvu file. DjVu ("déjà vu") was designed in the late 1990s specifically for scanned documents: it separates the text layer from the page background and compresses each aggressively, so a 600-page scanned book fits in a few dozen megabytes. Internet Archive, library portals and academic file collections adopted it widely.

The problem is the present day. Windows, macOS, iOS and Android ship no DjVu viewer. Browsers don't render it. Most e-readers ignore it. To read that textbook on your tablet — or send it to a colleague without a "what is this file?" reply — you convert it to PDF once and never think about it again.

How to convert DjVu to PDF — step by step

1

Open the tool

Go to pdfty.com/tools/djvu-to-pdf. Works in any browser — no DjVu software needed on your machine.

2

Upload the DjVu

Drag the .djvu (or .djv) file in. Free up to 20 MB and 50 pages — thanks to DjVu's compression, 20 MB holds a lot of book.

Convert

Each DjVu page is rendered and written into a PDF. Multi-hundred-page scans take a bit longer; most files finish in well under a minute.

DjVu vs PDF for scanned documents — the honest trade

The one column DjVu wins is file size — its scan-specific compression (separating crisp text from the page background) is still better than generic PDF image compression. Everything else favors PDF in 2026.

Free local alternatives

  • DjVuLibre (Windows, Mac, Linux). The open-source reference toolkit. Its command line converts directly: ddjvu -format=pdf input.djvu output.pdf. Reliable and scriptable — the right choice for batch-converting a large personal archive offline.
  • DjView (part of DjVuLibre). Open the file, Export As → PDF, or print to PDF. A GUI route if the command line isn't your thing.
  • macOS: DjView + Preview. macOS has no native DjVu support; after exporting via DjView you can do any further page work in Preview.
  • Mobile. Honest answer: converting locally on a phone is painful — DjVu reader apps exist but PDF export is usually a paid feature. The browser tool is the practical mobile route.

If you have one file and no DjVuLibre installed, the browser converter is faster than finding, installing and learning the toolkit.

Practical gotchas

File size grows — plan for it. A 15 MB DjVu book can become a 40-60 MB PDF, because PDF stores the page images with less specialised compression. Compress afterwards if you need to email it.

Text layer. Many DjVu files from archives include a hidden OCR text layer. Depending on how the source was produced, that layer may not survive conversion — the guaranteed path to searchable text is to run the converted PDF through OCR. Our free OCR guide shows what accuracy to expect on old typefaces.

Quality is capped by the scan. Conversion renders what's in the file. A 300 DPI scan stays 300 DPI; blurry source pages stay blurry. No upscaling is invented — which also means nothing is lost.

Crooked pages stay crooked. Old book scans often have slight rotation. After converting, Deskew can straighten pages (note it re-rasterises them), and Crop trims dark scan borders.

Multi-file books. Some archives split books into per-chapter DjVu files. Convert each, then stitch with Merge — see merging PDFs without Adobe.

Frequently asked questions

What is a DjVu file and why do archives use it?

A scanned-document format from AT&T Labs (1998) that compresses page scans far better than generic image formats by splitting text from background. Archives adopted it because storage was expensive; it lingers because those collections were never re-encoded.

Will the converted PDF be searchable?

The pages come through as scanned images, so by default: no. Run the result through OCR to add a searchable, copyable text layer — that's a separate 30-second step.

Why is the PDF bigger than the DjVu was?

DjVu's codecs are purpose-built for scans and genuinely more efficient. PDF trades some size for the ability to open everywhere. Compress claws most of it back.

Does the conversion reduce image quality?

No — pages are rendered at the resolution stored in the DjVu. What you see in a DjVu viewer is what you get in the PDF.

What are the free limits?

20 MB per file, 50 pages, 10 operations per day — no sign-up, no watermark. Longer books (very common with DjVu) need Pro, $9/month, which removes the limits. Files are deleted from the server within 1 hour either way.

Is it safe to upload rare or unpublished material?

Files transfer over HTTPS, are never logged content-wise, and are automatically deleted within an hour. For material you can't upload at all, use DjVuLibre locally (ddjvu -format=pdf).

Can I convert PDF back to DjVu?

Yes — PDF to DjVu exists for the rare workflow that needs it (some archive pipelines still ingest DjVu).

The scan is upside down / has blank pages — fix before or after?

After. PDF tooling is far richer: Rotate fixes orientation, Delete blank pages drops empty sides, Reorder pages fixes sequence — all in the browser.
