How to Convert RTF to PDF (WordPad & Legacy Docs, Free)
Turn RTF files from WordPad or any old word processor into clean PDFs that look the same everywhere. Free, in the browser, no sign-up — about 10 seconds.

You found an old .rtf file — meeting notes from 2009, a résumé written
in WordPad, a contract someone saved in "Rich Text Format" because it
was the safe choice back then. Now you need to email it, print it, or
upload it to a portal that only accepts PDF.
RTF had a good run: it was the universal exchange format before PDF took that job. But it's now a legacy format. Microsoft deprecated WordPad in 2023 and removed it from newer Windows 11 builds, so a fresh Windows machine may not even have a bundled editor for it. And even where RTF opens fine, it reflows — margins, fonts and page breaks depend on whichever app and printer driver opens it. The same file can be 3 pages on your machine and 4 on someone else's.
Converting to PDF freezes the document: fixed pages, embedded fonts, identical everywhere.
How to convert RTF to PDF — step by step
Open the tool
Go to pdfty.com/tools/rtf-to-pdf. No account needed.
Upload your RTF
Drag the .rtf file in. Free up to 20 MB and 50 pages — more than enough for virtually any rich-text document.
Convert
The file is rendered through a real office engine (LibreOffice), so fonts, lists, tables and embedded images are laid out the way a word processor would print them.
Download the PDF
A standard PDF with fixed pages. Open it anywhere — phone, browser, print shop.
Done — file auto-deletes
Your upload and the result are wiped from the server within 1 hour.

RTF vs PDF — what actually changes
| Property | RTF | |
|---|---|---|
| Layout | Reflows per app and printer | Fixed — identical everywhere |
| Fonts | Must be installed on the reader's machine | Embedded in the file |
| Opens on phones | Needs a word processor app | Any built-in viewer |
| Editable by recipient | Yes, trivially | Not without dedicated tools |
| Accepted by upload portals | Rarely | Almost always |
| Still your editable master copy | Yes — keep it | No — PDF is the output, not the source |
Keep the RTF as your editable original. The PDF is the version you send.
Free local alternatives
No internet, or a file you'd rather not upload? All of these are legitimate and free:
- LibreOffice (Windows, Mac, Linux). Open the RTF, then File → Export as PDF. LibreOffice's RTF support is excellent — it's the same engine pdfty uses server-side.
- LibreOffice from the command line, for batches:
soffice --headless --convert-to pdf *.rtfconverts a whole folder in one go. - Microsoft Word. Open the file, File → Save As → PDF. If you have Word installed, this is the closest match to how the document was originally authored.
- macOS TextEdit. Opens RTF natively; File → Export as PDF is built in. Fine for simple documents, though complex tables can render loosely.
- Google Docs. Upload the RTF to Drive, open with Docs, then File → Download → PDF. Note that Docs re-interprets the layout, so spacing can shift more than with the options above.
The browser route wins when you're on a phone, a locked-down work machine, or you just don't want to install a 300 MB office suite to convert one file.
Practical gotchas
Font substitution. RTF references fonts by name but doesn't embed them. If the file uses a font the converter doesn't have (some 90s-era documents specify long-gone printer fonts), a metric-compatible substitute is used. Text stays intact; exact letter shapes and line breaks can shift slightly.
Old embedded images. WordPad-era documents sometimes embed images as WMF/EMF (Windows Metafile) drawings rather than PNG/JPG. Most convert cleanly, but a very old metafile can rasterise at modest resolution. If a logo looks soft in the PDF, re-insert it as a PNG in the source first.
Page setup lives in the opener, not always in the file. RTF may not pin down page size and margins, in which case the converter applies sane defaults (A4/Letter). If your document was designed for unusual margins, double-check page breaks in the output.
No macros, no fields. RTF can contain date fields and the like; they're rendered as their current value and frozen — which is usually exactly what you want in a PDF.
Encrypted or proprietary extensions. Files that are actually
.doc renamed to .rtf (it happens) may fail. Rename them back or
use Word to PDF.
Frequently asked questions
What is an RTF file, exactly?
Rich Text Format — a plain-text-based document format Microsoft introduced in 1987 for exchanging formatted text between word processors. It stores fonts, styles, tables and embedded images, but not fixed pages. WordPad used it as its default format for decades.
Will my formatting survive the conversion?
Formatting that RTF stores — typefaces, bold/italic/underline, colors, alignment, lists, basic tables, images, headers and footers — carries over. What can shift slightly is line wrapping when a font has to be substituted.
Can I convert RTF to PDF without installing anything?
Yes — that's the point of the browser tool. Upload, convert, download. Works on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android, and there's no watermark on the output.
Is it really free? What are the limits?
Free covers files up to 20 MB and 50 pages, 10 operations per day. Pro ($9/month) removes the limits. RTF files are mostly text, so 20 MB is a very high ceiling — that's thousands of pages of prose.
Is my document safe?
Files are processed over HTTPS and deleted from the server within 1 hour, automatically. Nothing is kept, and document contents are never logged.
WordPad is gone from my Windows 11 — how do I even open RTF now?
You don't need to open it to convert it: upload the file as-is. If you also want to edit it, install the free LibreOffice, or open the file in Word — both read RTF natively.
Can I convert multiple RTF files at once?
Convert them individually (each counts as one operation), then combine the PDFs with Merge. See how to merge PDFs without Adobe for the full workflow.
Can I go the other way — PDF back to RTF?
Yes: PDF to RTF produces an editable rich-text file, with the usual caveat that reconstructed layout is an approximation of the fixed PDF pages.
