How to Remove Blank Pages from a PDF (Automatically, Free)

Scanner slipped empty pages into your PDF? Auto-detect and remove blank pages free, no sign-up — plus how detection works and when a page stays.

Scan in, blanks out — a clean PDF in seconds

You scanned a 30-page contract and got a 60-page PDF — every other page pure white. Or a report came back from the office copier with random empty pages scattered through it. Deleting them one by one in a viewer works for three pages; for thirty it's misery. Here's how to remove blank pages from a PDF automatically, and what the auto-detection can and cannot promise.

Why scanned PDFs fill up with blank pages

Almost all blank pages are scanner artifacts:

  • Duplex scanning of single-sided originals. The scanner captures both sides of every sheet, so each one-sided page gets a white twin.
  • Double feeds. The feeder grabs two sheets at once and one passes through unscanned, leaving a misplaced blank where content should be.
  • Separator and cover sheets. Batch scanning workflows insert blank sheets between documents, and they end up in the output file.
  • Deliberate blanks in the original. Books and formal documents pad chapters so sections start on a right-hand page.

The first three you want gone. The fourth is a judgment call — more on that below.

How auto-detection actually works

A "blank" page in a scanned PDF is rarely a perfectly empty object — it's an image of a white sheet, complete with scanner noise. So the detector doesn't ask "is there anything on this page?" (the answer would always be "yes, a full-page image"). Instead it renders each page and measures ink coverage: what fraction of the pixels differ meaningfully from the paper background.

  • A page well below the threshold — essentially uniform white or near-white — is flagged as blank.
  • A page above it — even a single line of text, a signature, or a stamp — is kept.

The threshold is deliberately conservative. The worst failure mode for this kind of tool is silently deleting a page that contained a faint but real signature or a handwritten note, so ambiguity resolves toward keeping the page.

Removing blank pages without an online tool

If your file is sensitive or you just prefer local tools, there are honest free routes:

  • Manually, in any viewer. macOS Preview: open the thumbnail sidebar, Cmd-click the blank pages, press Delete. Windows: most free PDF readers can't delete pages, but the free tier of PDF24 Creator (desktop) can. Fine for a handful of pages, painful for fifty.
  • Ghostscript (command line). gs -o - -sDEVICE=inkcov file.pdf prints per-page ink coverage; pages reporting ~0.00 on all channels are blank, and a short script can rebuild the file without them. This is essentially the same technique the automatic tool uses — minus the preview.
  • Rescan with blank-page skipping. Most office scanners and apps like NAPS2 have a "skip blank pages" option. For future scans, turn it on and the problem never reaches the PDF.

The trade-off: the manual routes give you total control but no detection, and the scripted route gives detection but no visual check. An automatic tool with a review step covers both.

Practical gotchas

  • Intentional blanks. Documents meant for double-sided printing use blank pages so chapters start on the front of a sheet. Remove them and your print layout shifts. If the page says "This page intentionally left blank," it isn't blank — it has text — and will be kept anyway.
  • Page numbering shifts. If the original pages were numbered, removing sheets creates gaps in the printed numbers (the content moves, the printed digits don't renumber themselves). Stamp fresh numbers afterwards with Page Numbers if it matters.
  • File size barely changes. Blank scanned pages compress extremely well, so deleting them trims the page count more than the megabytes. If the goal is a smaller file, run Compress too — see how to make a PDF smaller.
  • References into deleted pages. Links or bookmarks that pointed at a removed page now point at its neighbor. Rare in scans, worth knowing for born-digital files.

Frequently asked questions

Will it delete a page that has a signature or stamp but nothing else?

No — any visible mark above the noise floor keeps the page. Detection errs on the side of keeping, which is also why some near-blank pages survive.

What counts as "blank" exactly?

A page whose rendered pixels are essentially uniform paper-white, within a small noise tolerance. Scanner speckle alone won't save a page, but bleed-through text or heavy shadows can.

Can I keep some of the detected blank pages?

Yes. The detected pages are shown before anything is removed — untick the ones you want to keep (intentional section breaks, for instance).

Does it work on normal, non-scanned PDFs?

Yes. A truly empty page in a born-digital PDF is the easiest case of all — it renders as pure white and is flagged immediately.

Is the text still selectable afterwards?

Yes. Pages are removed from the document structure; the remaining pages are byte-for-byte what they were, including any OCR text layer.

How big a file can I process for free?

Up to 20 MB and 50 pages, 10 operations per day, no sign-up, no watermark. Files are deleted from the server within 1 hour. Pro ($9/mo) lifts the size and daily limits.

My scan has blank-ish gray pages — will they be caught?

Usually, if they're uniformly gray (a dirty scanner glass produces these). Pages with structured content like bleed-through from dense text may be kept — review the preview and untick manually.

Can I remove specific pages that aren't blank?

That's a different job — use Remove Pages to pick arbitrary pages, or Split to carve the document up.
