How to Convert PDF to HEIC (Compact Page Images for Apple Devices)

Convert PDF pages into compact HEIC images — about half the size of JPG at similar quality. Free online, honest about when HEIC is the wrong pick.

PDF pages → compact HEIC images for Apple devices

Let's start with the honest part: most people who think they want PDF to HEIC actually want PDF to JPG or PDF to PNG. HEIC is a genuinely good format — it's what iPhones shoot photos in, and it packs JPG-level quality into about half the bytes — but it's a format that lives most comfortably inside the Apple ecosystem. Send a HEIC to a random Windows user and you may get a "can't open this file" reply.

So when does PDF to HEIC actually make sense?

  • You're building a photo library of document pages on Apple devices. Page images dropped into Photos on an iPhone or iPad take half the storage as HEIC, and iOS treats them natively.
  • Storage-constrained archives of page snapshots. Hundreds of page images at half size adds up — on device and in iCloud.
  • An Apple-centric workflow asked for it. Some iOS automation and app pipelines standardize on HEIC, and feeding them their native format avoids a conversion step on-device.

If that's you, here's the fastest route. If you're just trying to get PDF pages into a slide deck or a website, jump to the comparison table below and pick a friendlier format.

HEIC vs JPG vs PNG vs WebP — pick deliberately

The right output format depends entirely on where the images are going:

DestinationBest formatWhy
Apple devices, tight on storageHEICHalf the size of JPG at similar quality; native on iOS/macOS
Email, chat, 'just send it anywhere'JPGOpens on everything made this century — [PDF to JPG](/en/tools/pdf-to-jpg)
Crisp text, diagrams, screenshotsPNGLossless, no compression artifacts on sharp edges — [PDF to PNG](/en/tools/pdf-to-png)
Modern websitesWebPSmall like HEIC but supported by every current browser — [PDF to WebP](/en/tools/pdf-to-webp)

Notice what's not a reason to pick HEIC: the web. Browsers largely don't display HEIC, even on Macs in some cases — Safari's support depends on the OS. Websites want WebP, JPG or PNG.

Where the size saving actually comes from

HEIC uses HEVC (H.265) compression — video-codec technology applied to still images. It predicts image regions from their neighbors far more cleverly than JPG's 1992-era approach, which is how it keeps quality while halving the bytes. For document pages this works well on photos and gradients; areas of flat color and sharp text compress efficiently too. The catch is exactly the same as the benefit: that codec is modern, patent-encumbered and unevenly licensed, which is why support outside Apple's ecosystem — where it's been standard since iOS 11 — remains inconsistent. The format isn't exotic because it's bad; it's exotic because of licensing politics. That's worth knowing when you decide whether your recipients can handle it.

Free local alternatives

On a Mac, you don't need anyone's server for this:

Preview. Open the PDF, select a page, File → Export, and pick HEIC as the format. Fine for a page or two; tedious for twenty.

sips (built into macOS). Convert any image to HEIC from Terminal: first render PDF pages to another image format, then sips -s format heic page.png --out page.heic. Scriptable, free, offline.

ImageMagick (cross-platform). Builds with libheif support can convert to HEIC directly, but checking whether your build has HEIF support — and compiling it in when it doesn't — is exactly the kind of yak-shaving the browser tool exists to avoid.

On Windows and Linux, honest answer: local HEIC encoding is awkward enough that the browser route is the practical option.

Practical gotchas

  • Text becomes pixels. Like every PDF-to-image conversion, HEIC output is rasterized: nothing is selectable, searchable or editable. Keep the PDF as your source of truth. Need the text itself? Use Extract text instead.
  • HEIC is lossy by default. Like JPG, it throws away detail to save space — it's just much better at choosing what to throw away. Fine for reading; for pixel-perfect reproduction of line art, PNG is the lossless choice.
  • One image per page. Unlike PDF or TIFF, HEIC isn't a multi-page document format in practice — a 30-page PDF becomes 30 images. If you want pages back in one file later, JPG to PDF or PNG to PDF will rebuild a PDF from images.
  • Uploading to web services? Many upload forms whitelist JPG/PNG and silently reject HEIC. Test before you convert a 50-page document.
  • Going the other way — iPhone photos into a document — is the far more common trip: HEIC to PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Why would I convert PDF to HEIC instead of JPG?

File size, mostly: HEIC stores similar quality in roughly half the bytes. If the images will live on Apple devices or in iCloud, that saving is real. If they'll be shared broadly, JPG's universal support wins.

Will the HEIC images open on Windows?

Not always out of the box. Windows can need HEIF codec extensions from the Microsoft Store. If your audience includes Windows users, convert to JPG or PNG instead — that's the honest recommendation.

Is the text in the images searchable?

No. Pages are rendered as pictures, so text is pixels. Keep the original PDF for searching and copying, or use Extract text to pull the text out separately.

Do I get one file or many?

One HEIC image per PDF page, delivered in page order. HEIC isn't used as a multi-page document container the way PDF or TIFF are.

Does conversion reduce quality?

Pages are rendered at good resolution and HEIC's compression is efficient, so documents stay readable and clean. HEIC is a lossy format though — for lossless output, use PDF to PNG.

What are the free limits?

20 MB per file, 50 pages, 10 operations per day — no sign-up, no watermark, and uploads are auto-deleted after 1 hour. Pro is $9/mo for unlimited use.

Can I turn the HEIC images back into a PDF?

Yes — HEIC to PDF reassembles images into a PDF, one image per page, in the order you choose.
