AI is Adobe Illustrator's native vector format; files saved with PDF compatibility (Illustrator's default) also contain a full PDF version of the artwork. SVG scales to any size without blurring and stays tiny for logos, icons and simple illustrations.
The first artboard is read through the embedded PDF, so files saved without PDF compatibility can't be converted. The artwork stays vector: paths are exported directly from the AI file, with text converted to outlines.
