CR2 is the RAW format of Canon cameras such as the EOS 5D, 6D, 80D and Rebel series: unprocessed sensor data with far more latitude than a JPG. PNG keeps every pixel exactly and supports transparent backgrounds, which makes it ideal for editing, screenshots, logos and graphics.
The RAW data is developed with LibRaw using the white balance recorded by the camera, at full sensor resolution and 8 bits per channel. PNG is lossless, so the conversion adds no compression artifacts.
