JPG to HEIC

Shrink JPG photos with the efficient HEIC format

HEIC stores photos at roughly half the size of an equivalent JPG with no visible difference, which is why Apple uses it on every iPhone. pdfty's JPG to HEIC converter is useful when you want to archive a large photo library in less space, or keep images consistent with the rest of an Apple Photos collection.

Conversion runs on our server with Pillow and libheif and saves at quality 85. EXIF rotation is applied, so photos stay upright. Be aware that HEIC is still not universal: Macs, iPhones and recent Android phones open it natively, but Windows often needs the HEIF Image Extensions codec and many websites reject HEIC uploads. Keep your JPGs if you need to share widely.

Upload several JPGs at once and you get a ZIP with one HEIC per image. Free: no daily limit, up to 20 MB per file, no watermark, no sign-up. Files are deleted within 1 hour. If you need a small file that still opens everywhere, Compress Image or JPG to WebP may serve you better.

How it works

  1. 1

    Upload your JPGs

Drag and drop one or more .jpg or .jpeg files. Up to 20 MB each free.

  2. 2

    Click Convert

Each image is re-encoded as HEIC at quality 85, with EXIF rotation applied.

  3. 3

    Wait a moment

Encoding HEIC is a little slower than JPG — usually a few seconds per photo.

  4. 4

    Download

One file gives a single .heic. Several files arrive as a ZIP.

  5. 5

    Check it opens

Open one result on the device you plan to use. On Windows you may need the HEIF codec.
