macOS Preview — the fastest on a Mac
Preview ships with every Mac and adds text boxes offline.
Open the PDF in Preview
Double-click the file. Preview is the default PDF viewer on macOS.
Open the markup toolbar
Click the pen-tip icon, or Tools → Annotate → Text. A text box appears.
Type and position
Drag the box onto the blank line, type your text, then use Font (the A icon) to match size and color.
Export a copy
File → Export as PDF so you keep the original untouched.

Free Adobe Acrobat Reader — best on Windows
The free Reader (not paid Pro) has a Fill & Sign mode built for exactly this.
- Open the PDF in Acrobat Reader.
- Click Fill & Sign (in the right-hand tools panel or under Tools).
- Click any spot on the page and start typing. The Ab cursor drops a text field wherever you click.
- Resize text with the small/large A buttons; add checkmarks and dots for checkboxes.
- File → Save As to keep the filled copy.
Fill & Sign works on flat forms (just lines printed on the page) as well as interactive ones, which is why it's the most reliable free option on Windows.
Your browser — for interactive forms
If the PDF is an interactive form (the fields highlight when you hover), you can fill it right in the browser:
- Open the PDF in Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
- Click into each field and type.
- Print → Save as PDF to export the filled version.
The limit: browsers can only fill existing form fields. They can't add free-floating text to a flat PDF — use Preview or Reader for that.

It's an image. Run OCR to add a searchable text layer, then either annotate it or send it through PDF to Word to edit.
Will adding text leave a watermark?
