How to Edit a PDF for Free (What Each Tool Really Can and Can't Do)

People type "edit a PDF" expecting one button. In reality PDFs were designed to be final — a fixed picture of a page — so "editing" one covers half a dozen very different tasks. The good news: every one of them has a free path. The trick is matching the task to the right tool instead of paying $20/month for a feature you'll use twice.

Below is the honest map. We'll be straight about what pdfty does and doesn't do: we don't have a single "edit" tool that lets you click into body text and retype it in the browser — almost no free tool does that cleanly. What we do have is a real tool for each structural edit, plus the convert-to-Word round-trip for genuine text changes.

First: what kind of "edit" do you actually need?

Annotations, text boxes and highlights (Preview & Acrobat Reader)

If you just need to mark up a PDF — add a comment, drop a text box on a blank line, highlight a sentence, draw an arrow — you don't need to buy anything. Two free tools already on most computers handle this.

macOS Preview (every Mac)

1. Open the PDF in Preview (double-click it).
2. Click the markup toolbar icon (the pen tip in a circle), or Tools → Annotate.
3. Pick Text to drop a text box anywhere, Highlight for a marker, Shapes for arrows and boxes, or Signature to sign.
4. File → Export as PDF to save a fresh copy.

Preview is genuinely offline — nothing leaves your Mac — which makes it the right pick for sensitive files.

Free Adobe Acrobat Reader (Mac & Windows)

The free Reader (not the paid Pro) includes Comment tools and Fill & Sign:

1. Open the PDF in Acrobat Reader.
2. Fill & Sign lets you click any blank line and type — great for flat forms.
3. Comment adds sticky notes, text boxes, highlights and drawing tools.
4. File → Save As to keep a copy.

Reader nudges you toward Pro constantly, but the annotate and fill features above are free and don't expire.

Your browser's built-in viewer

Chrome, Edge and Firefox all render PDFs and let you fill interactive form fields right in the tab, then print-to-PDF to save. They can't add free-floating text to a flat (non-interactive) PDF, though — for that use Preview or Reader.

Structural edits pdfty actually does

The real way to edit body text: the Word round-trip

Here's the honest part most "edit PDF" articles skip. Editing the actual paragraphs of a PDF — retyping a sentence, changing a price, fixing a typo in the body — is hard in every browser tool, ours included, because PDF text isn't stored as editable paragraphs. It's stored as positioned glyphs. Free in-browser "PDF editors" that claim to do this usually cover one line with a white box and retype over it, which breaks the moment the text reflows.

The reliable free route is a round-trip through Word:

This works best for text-heavy, simple-layout documents (letters, reports, resumes). For a scanned PDF (an image with no text layer), run OCR first so PDF to Word has real text to extract.

Frequently asked questions

Does pdfty have a "PDF editor" where I can click and retype text?

No — and we'd rather say so than pretend. We don't have an in-browser tool that lets you click into body text and retype it. For real text changes, use the PDF to Word → edit → Word to PDF round-trip. For annotations and text boxes, use macOS Preview or the free Acrobat Reader. For structural edits (sign, watermark, redact, pages), use the dedicated pdfty tools above.

What's the difference between annotating and editing?

Annotating adds a layer on top — a text box, highlight or note that sits over the original. Editing changes the underlying content. Preview and Reader annotate; the Word round-trip actually edits the text.

Is macOS Preview really enough to edit a PDF?

For annotations, form-filling, signatures and page shuffling — yes, entirely, and offline. What Preview can't do is rewrite existing paragraphs. That's the Word-round-trip job.

Can I edit a scanned PDF?

A scan is just an image, so there's no text to edit until you add a text layer. Run it through OCR first, then use the Word round-trip to change wording.

Why does the black rectangle I drew in Preview not count as redaction?

Because the text underneath is still there — anyone can select and copy it, or delete the rectangle. To permanently remove sensitive text, use Redact PDF, which deletes the underlying data. More on this in how to black out text in a PDF.

Do I need Adobe Acrobat Pro for any of this?

No. Acrobat Pro (~$20/month) bundles all these features in one app, but each task above has a free equivalent. Pro is worth it only if you edit PDFs daily and want everything in one place.

Will editing add a watermark to my PDF?

Not with pdfty (free, no watermarks), Preview, or the free Acrobat Reader. Some online "free editors" stamp their logo on the output — check before you download.

My PDF is password-protected and I can't edit it. What now?

Remove the password first with Unlock PDF (you'll need to know it), then edit the unlocked copy.
