The top strip takes the day number, the date, where you are, who you are with and the temperature, then a row of eight weather tick boxes — sunny, cloudy, rain, storm, snow, windy, hot, cold. Ticking the weather takes a second and is the detail that brings a day back years later, which is why it is a row of boxes rather than another line to write on.
Below it, a deep ruled box headed "What we did today" gives around sixteen lines, enough for a proper account of a long day without turning the page into homework on an evening when everyone is tired. A shorter box underneath asks for the best bit of the day. That is the prompt that gets something out of a child who would otherwise write "it was good", and it is the line you will actually want to read again in a year, because it is the one that says what the day felt like rather than what was on the itinerary.
The bottom third is an empty bordered box for drawing, or for gluing in a ticket, a stamp, a map or a receipt — the things that make a travel journal worth keeping. Print one page per day of the trip, or print a stack and bind them when you get home. The text boxes are PDF form fields if you would rather type, though most people write in this one by hand. One page, US Letter or A4.
