Most packing lists assume one suitcase. This one is a grid: the categories run down the left — clothes, shoes, underwear and socks, nightwear, swim and beach, warm layers and rain, toiletries, medication, documents and money, electronics and chargers, books, games and toys, and anything else — and each person has a column of their own, with a writing line in the header for their name.

The cells are deep enough to list several things rather than tick one, because what a seven-year-old needs under "clothes" is a different list from what an adult needs, and writing "5 t-shirts, 2 shorts, swim shoes" is the point. Reading across a row shows whether everybody has sun cream; reading down a column shows whether one person's bag is still empty.

Pick four or six people before you download. A ruled box at the foot covers the shared bags — cases, chargers, first aid, snacks, documents — and who carries what, which is the part that gets argued about at the door. Every cell and every name is a PDF form field, so you can fill it in on screen and print a copy per person, or print it blank for the kitchen table. One landscape page, US Letter or A4.

How to use it

    Choose how many people

Four or six columns, then US Letter or A4.

  2. 2

    Name the columns

Write or type a name on the line in each column header, so every traveller has their own list on the same sheet.

  3. 3

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

  4. 4

    Work down, then across

Fill each person's column category by category, then read across the rows to catch the things everybody needs and nobody packed.

Four or six people across, and twelve categories down, plus a ruled box at the foot for shared bags and who carries what.
Yes. Each person's name is a field and every cell in the grid is a multi-line field, so you can list several items per box in any normal PDF viewer.
No, only the twelve category names down the left. What each person packs is personal, so the grid stays blank.
You can — use a column per bag, or per week of a long trip, instead of per person.
Yes. The page is landscape and the column widths are worked out from the paper, so both sizes give the same grid with room to write.
