The materials table takes twelve or eighteen rows, each with the material, the supplier, the quantity you actually used, the unit cost and the line total. Buying a ten metre reel and using forty centimetres of it is where most pricing goes wrong, so the quantity used and unit cost columns are separate on purpose. There is a currency line at the top of the sheet rather than a printed symbol, so the page works in any country.

Under the materials is a four-row time table: the task, the hours it took, your rate per hour and the resulting labour cost. Splitting the work into tasks, such as cutting, assembly, finishing and photographing, usually shows that the hidden half of the time is not the making. Paying yourself a rate is the step hobby sellers skip most often, which is why the table asks for it directly.

The pricing block runs down the page in eight lines: materials total, labour total, overhead for packaging, postage and listing fees, total cost, cost per item made, the markup you are using, the retail price and a wholesale price at roughly half of retail. The total cost and retail lines are set in bold with a heavier rule so the two numbers that matter stand out. Every field is fillable, so you can keep a costed file per product.

How to use it

  1. 1

Pick how many material rows you need

12 rows suit a single item; 18 suit a kit or a project with many small components.

  2. 2

List the materials and what you used

Record the quantity actually used and the unit cost, not the price of the whole reel or pack.

  3. 3

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

  4. 4

Add your hours, then price it

Fill in the time table at your own hourly rate, add overhead, then work down the pricing block to a retail and wholesale figure.

The usual craft rule of thumb is wholesale at about half of retail, so a shop can double it. The line is a prompt, not a calculation.
