This is a crossing-words puzzle built from a list of ordinary nouns: anchor, harbour, mountain, teacher, thunder. The clues are short definitions rather than cryptic wordplay, and the answer length is printed after each one, so it suits a child, a learner of English or anyone who wants a crossword they can finish over a coffee. The 13x13 grid holds about fifteen answers and the 15x15 about eighteen.
The grid is generated by laying each word where it crosses the most letters already placed, then rejecting any placement that would run two words side by side and create letter strings that are not words. The finished grid is then read back run by run: every horizontal and vertical run of two or more letters must be one of the words that was placed, or the layout is thrown away and another is built. Sixty layouts are generated and the fullest valid one is printed.
Clues are grouped into Across and Down under the grid with the usual numbering, and the answer length follows each clue in brackets so nobody wastes time on a word that cannot fit. Page two prints the grid with every letter filled in, plus the answers listed by number under Across and Down. The squares are large enough for capital letters written by hand, and the sheet is plain vector artwork with nothing to type into, so it prints as many times as a classroom or a quiet afternoon needs.
