Picture A and picture B show the same park: a house with windows and a door, three trees, a fence, flowers, clouds, birds, a kite, a bench, a pond and a ball. Picture B has been altered in eight or twelve places. Something is missing, something has moved, something has shrunk, or something has lost a window, a petal, a fence post or a ray of sunshine. A row of tick boxes under the pictures lets a solver count the finds off, one box per difference.

Both scenes come from one description of the park, which is drawn twice. The changes are applied to a copy of that description by a seeded generator, so the two pictures differ in exactly the places the key reports and nowhere else, and the count printed on the page is the real count. Nothing is drawn freehand, so the unchanged parts of the two scenes line up exactly and a difference is always a genuine difference rather than a wobble in the drawing.

The sheet is landscape so both pictures are large enough to compare at arm's length rather than squinting at two narrow columns. Page two repeats the pair with a red circle around every change in picture B, each circle sized to the thing it marks, so a parent can settle an argument without hunting. The line work is plain black on white and prints cheaply, and the tick boxes under the pictures make it easy to race two copies against each other.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose how many differences

Eight is a quick round for a young child; twelve takes real searching.

  2. 2

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

  3. 3

    Work section by section

Compare the sky first, then the buildings and trees, then the ground. Tick a box for each difference you find.

  4. 4

    Check the key

Page two circles every change in picture B.

Yes. Picture A is the original and every change is in picture B, which is said on the sheet.
Yes. The changes are applied one at a time to a copy of the scene and counted as they are made, so the figure printed on the page is the number you can find.
So the two pictures sit side by side at a size you can actually compare, rather than squeezed into two narrow columns.
Print two copies and start together. The tick boxes make it easy to see who has found more.
US Letter if you print in North America, A4 almost everywhere else. The page is laid out again for each size, so the puzzle fills the sheet either way instead of leaving a white band down one edge.
