Each sheet holds twenty scrambled words from one theme: nature, jobs, space or weather. The mixed-up letters are printed in spaced capitals, and under each one is a row of empty boxes, one per letter, so a solver can count the answer's length before writing anything. Two columns of ten fill the page, with a tip box at the foot for anyone who gets stuck.

The scrambles are generated rather than typed out, and each one is checked twice: the shuffled letters are never left in the original order, and no scramble is allowed to spell another answer on the same sheet. The word list itself is checked for anagram pairs, so two clues can never share one solution. The same theme always produces the same twenty scrambles, which matters if a teacher prints a class set across two days.

Page two repeats the sheet with every answer written into its boxes in red, numbered to match, so marking a class set takes a minute. The sheet works as a warm-up in a spelling or language lesson, a quiet activity for a long journey, a table game at a party or a round in a family quiz. It is plain vector artwork with nothing to type into, so print as many copies as the room needs, and keep the answer page back if you are setting the puzzle for somebody else.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose a theme

All twenty answers come from the theme you pick, which is printed under the title as a hint.

  2. 2

    Print it and solve it

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so the grid keeps its spacing. This sheet has no form fields: it is made to be solved with a pencil.

  3. 3

    Count the boxes first

The boxes show how long the answer is; look for letter pairs such as TH, CH or ING and place them first.

  4. 4

    Mark it from page two

The answer page shows every word written into its boxes.

Twenty, in two columns of ten, all from the theme you chose.
No. The generator rejects a scramble that spells another answer on the sheet, and the word lists are checked so that no two answers are anagrams of each other.
The eight and nine letter words are a fair challenge; the shorter ones give a child a way in. Mixed-age groups usually race each other through a sheet.
No. The same options always produce the same sheet, so a reprint matches the copy you already have, which matters when a class or a club is working through it together. Change an option for a different puzzle.
US Letter if you print in North America, A4 almost everywhere else. The page is laid out again for each size, so the puzzle fills the sheet either way instead of leaving a white band down one edge.
