The PDF is two pages, one for each player, so a game needs a single download. Each sheet carries two 10 by 10 grids with rows lettered A to J and columns numbered 1 to 10. The top grid is where you draw your own fleet; the bottom grid is where you record the squares you have called, marking an X for a hit and a small o for a miss, so you never call the same square twice.

Beside the top grid is your fleet key: carrier of five squares, battleship of four, cruiser and submarine of three each and destroyer of two, with a row of small boxes next to every ship so you can tick off the hits taken and know exactly when something sinks. The same key appears beside the lower grid for the enemy fleet. Under it, a block of small boxes lets you tally how many shots you have fired.

The right-hand column also carries a short reminder of the rules and a few ruled lines for notes about where your rival seems to be aiming. Nothing on the page is a form field, because the whole point is that your opponent must not see your sheet. Print the two pages, hand one to each player, and keep them apart.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Print both pages

Page one goes to player one, page two to player two. Print at 100% so the grids keep their squares.

  2. 2

    Place your fleet

Draw five ships on the top grid, across or down, without overlapping: lengths five, four, three, three and two.

  3. 3

    Take turns calling squares

Say a square such as B7. Your rival answers hit or miss, and sunk when a whole ship is gone.

  4. 4

    Record every call

Mark X for a hit and o for a miss on the lower grid, and tick a box in the fleet key for each hit you take.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. There is no watermark and no sign-up for your first 20 downloads each day; after that a free account keeps downloads going. You may print the file as often as you like for personal, school or business use.
Two, one per player, and they are both in this one PDF. Print it and hand a page to each player.
Five: a carrier of five squares, a battleship of four, a cruiser and a submarine of three each and a destroyer of two, seventeen squares in all.
No, and that is deliberate. The sheet has no form fields because a hidden fleet only works on paper you keep to yourself.
Rows A to J down the left, columns 1 to 10 across the top, so a call is a letter and a number such as B7.
US Letter if you print in North America, A4 almost everywhere else. The layout is rebuilt for each size, so the sheet fills the page either way instead of leaving a white band down one edge.
