Six sections, 45 printed items. The first two change with the age you choose. Elementary lists pencils, crayons, safety scissors, wide-ruled notebooks, a book bag and a recorder. Middle school lists pens, highlighters, a protractor and compass, a scientific calculator, squared paper, a lab coat and a PE kit. High school lists a ring binder, index cards, a graphing calculator, set texts, a laptop and charger, and somewhere to back work up.

The other four sections stay the same, because a uniform, a lunch box and a permission slip do not change much between eleven and sixteen. Uniform and clothing covers tops, shoes, PE kit, a coat and name labels in everything. Lunch and after school covers the box, the bottle, the lunch account and the bus pass. Forms to return gathers the paperwork schools ask for in the first fortnight and lose patience with in the third.

The last section is the first week itself: walk the route once, test the morning with a real alarm, agree a bedtime and a screen cut-off, pack the bag the night before, put the timetable on the fridge and save the school office number. Two write-in boxes hold what is still to buy and the teacher, bus and club times. All of it is fillable. One page, US Letter or A4.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose the age group

Elementary, middle school or high school — this changes the basics and the by-subject supplies. Then pick US Letter or A4.

  2. 2

    Add the school's own list

Type the child's name, year and first day, and put anything the school asked for on the blank line in each section.

  3. 3

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

  4. 4

    Shop once, then tick

Use the "Still to buy" box as the shopping list, and keep the forms section until every slip has gone back.

The bag and basics section and the by-subject section. Uniform, lunch and after school, forms to return and the first week are the same in all three, and every section has a blank line for your school's own requests.

Print one per child. The name, year and first day are at the top, and the supplies differ by age, so two sheets stay clearer than one shared list.
