Six sections, 39 printed checks. The car covers oil, coolant, tyre pressure including the spare, tread, wipers, lights and brakes. Documents and money covers licences, insurance, breakdown cover, registration, bookings and tolls. Snacks, entertainment and the emergency kit cover the things that make a long drive bearable and the things that make a breakdown survivable — jump leads, a jack and inflator, a warning triangle, first aid, a torch, a blanket and water.

The last section is the one you run through with the engine already on: tank full, route agreed, phone mounted, belts on and child seats checked, house locked, and somebody who knows where you are going. Every section ends with a blank line, because every car and every family has one thing that belongs on this list and nowhere else.

Across the bottom, an eight-row log records each stop: odometer, town, fuel, cost, time and a note. Totals for distance and fuel cost sit underneath, which is what you need if you are splitting the cost or claiming the mileage later. Route, dates, every checkbox, every log cell and the totals are form fields, so you can fill it on screen or keep it in the glovebox with a pen. One page, US Letter or A4.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Download the checklist

Choose US Letter or A4 and download the one-page PDF.

  2. 2

Check the car a few days early

Work down the car section while there is still time to fix a tyre or book a service, not on the morning you leave.

  3. 3

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

  4. 4

    Keep it in the car

Use the stops and fuel log on the road and add up the totals at the end, so you know what the drive actually cost.
