Young children follow a chart they can read without reading it. Every step on this sheet has a dashed box next to it for a drawing or a sticker, so a child who is not reading yet can still see what comes next: out of bed, bathroom, teeth, dressed, breakfast, school bag. The steps are printed in the order they actually happen, which is what stops the morning turning into a negotiation.

Each step has seven checkboxes, one for Monday through Sunday, so a single sheet lasts a week and the child can see the whole run of days at once. Pick the morning routine, the bedtime routine, or both on the same page. Morning or bedtime on its own prints eight steps and four blank lines; both together print six steps each plus a blank line, so everything still fits on one sheet.

The child's name, the week, the blank steps, the reward line and every tick box are form fields, so you can type your own steps before printing. Put it on the fridge or the bedroom door at the child's eye level, and let them tick their own boxes rather than ticking for them, because doing the ticking is most of why a chart like this works at all. One page, US Letter or A4.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose the routine

Morning, bedtime, or both routines on one sheet. Then pick US Letter or A4.

  2. 2

Change the steps if you need to

Type over the blank lines to add steps of your own, and fill in the name and the week.

  3. 3

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

  4. 4

Add a picture to each step

Draw a simple picture or stick a sticker in the dashed box beside each step, then tick a column together at the end of each day.
