After a fire, a flood or a burglary, an insurer asks what you had, what it was worth and how you know. Remembering that from an empty room is close to impossible, which is why loss adjusters ask for an inventory. This one gives you five columns — item, brand or model, serial number, purchase date and value — on ruled landscape pages, with a total at the foot of every page.

One room per page prints six sheets: living room, kitchen and dining, bedrooms, bathrooms and laundry, office, electronics and media, and garage, basement and outdoor. Each sheet holds 18 items and its own room total. The all-rooms layout puts the whole house on a single landscape page: 20 rows with an extra Room column, which is enough for the high-value items most policies actually care about.

Every cell is a fillable form field, so you can type the inventory, keep the file and print a copy to store away from the house or with your policy documents. Photograph receipts and serial plates as you work through a room; the serial number column is the one that makes a claim go quickly. US Letter or A4, landscape.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose the layout

One room per page for a full household inventory, or all rooms on one sheet for a quick record of the valuables. Then pick US Letter or A4.

  2. 2

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

  3. 3

Work through one room at a time

Write the item, brand or model, serial number, purchase date and what it would cost to replace. Photograph receipts and serial plates as you go.

  4. 4

    Keep a copy off site

Store the filled PDF somewhere other than the house and print a copy for your policy folder, so the inventory survives whatever the claim is about.

Check your policy. Most contents cover is on a replacement basis, so what it would cost to buy the item again today is usually the more useful figure. The purchase date column shows the insurer how old it is.
