Seven sections cover the whole trip: shelter, sleeping, kitchen and water, food and drink, clothing, tools and light, and first aid and safety. Around 58 items are printed with a checkbox each, and every section ends with a blank line for the gear only you take. Pack against the sheet instead of from memory and the thing you forget stops being the tent stakes or the lighter.

The camping style rewrites the list. Tent camping lists a groundsheet, a mallet, a single-burner stove and a cooler. Car camping adds a shade canopy, camp chairs, a folding table, a two-burner stove, an air mattress and firewood, because the car carries it. Backpacking swaps all of that for a lightweight tent, an inflatable pad, a canister stove, a water filter, dehydrated meals and a trowel, because weight is the whole problem.

The trip name, the number of nights, every checkbox and the blank lines are PDF form fields, so you can build your own version on screen and reprint it before each trip. A box in the spare space tracks what you still have to buy or borrow, which is the list that matters in the week before you leave. Print a copy for each trip, or laminate one and tick it with a dry-erase marker. One page, US Letter or A4.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Pick the camping style

Tent, car camping or backpacking — each prints a different gear list. Then choose US Letter or A4.

  2. 2

    Add your own gear

Type the trip name and the number of nights, and use the blank line in each section for anything the list misses.

  3. 3

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

  4. 4

    Pack against the sheet

Tick each item as it goes in the car or the pack, and note what is still missing in the buy-or-borrow box.
