The main table gives you twenty rows and six columns: date, route or where you ran, distance, time, pace, and a wide column for how it felt — the legs, the breathing, the hill that was easier than last month, the weather that made it harder. Under it sits a second, smaller table with a row for each of five weeks plus a block total, so the figure that matters for planning is written down rather than worked out from memory.

Choose miles or kilometres before downloading. The distance and pace headers print mi and min/mi, or km and min/km, which keeps a log readable a year later when you have forgotten which you used. The header line also has space for the training block you are in and for the shoes you are running in, which is the only way most people ever find out how far a pair has gone.

Every cell is a fillable field, so a run can be typed in from your watch on the sofa, and the sheet can equally be printed blank for a pencil. It is one page in US Letter or A4. The sheet sets no mileage and prints no plan: it is a record of the running you did, which is exactly what you want in front of you when you decide what next week should look like, or when a coach or physiotherapist asks what you have actually been doing.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Pick miles or kilometres

The distance and pace column headers change to match.

  2. 2

    Fill the header

Name the month or training block and the shoes you are running in.

  3. 3

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

  4. 4

    Add the weekly total

On your rest day, fill the week's row at the foot: runs, total distance, longest run.
