Each day gets its own block with a heading bar, a small date field and three numbered lines. Three is the point: enough to make you think past the obvious one, few enough that it still happens on a Thursday when you are tired. The lines are spaced for ordinary handwriting rather than squeezed in, and every one of the twenty-one is a fillable field if you would rather type.

At the foot of the page a ruled strip asks what you want more of after a week of looking. That is where a gratitude list turns into something you act on rather than something you merely keep: the same name appearing four times, the fact that every good line this week happened outdoors, or the quiet evidence that the days you walked somewhere were the days with three easy answers on them.

Choose a Monday or Sunday start before downloading, print it on US Letter or A4, and the same page prints again every week of the year because nothing is dated. Punch it for a binder, keep a stack by the bed, or print four and staple them for a month. The paper version has one advantage over an app worth mentioning: nothing else arrives on it while you are writing.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose the week start

Monday or Sunday first, whichever matches your week.

  2. 2

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

  3. 3

    Write three things a day

Small and specific beats big and vague — the coffee that was still hot, not "my family".

  4. 4

    Fill the strip on Sunday

Read the week back and write down what you want more of.
