How to white out content in a PDF
Whiteout works like correction tape: it paints a white box over part of the page so you can hide a mistake or type something new in its place. It only changes how the page looks, not what the file contains.
Step by step
Choose Whiteout
Click Whiteout in the tool rail or press W.
Drag over the content
Drag a box over the text, line or image you want to cover.
Type new text if needed
Switch to Add text (T) and type the replacement on top of the white area.
Download
Download the PDF. The covered area appears blank.
Tips
- Whiteout is cosmetic. The text underneath is still in the file and can be copied or found with search.
- For passwords, account numbers or personal data, always use Redact (X), which removes the content permanently.
- To change a word that is real text, Edit text (E) is often cleaner than whiteout plus new text.
Frequently asked questions
Is whiteout safe for confidential information?
No. Whiteout only hides content visually. Anyone can still copy or search the text underneath. Use Redact for sensitive data.
What is the difference between whiteout and redaction?
Whiteout draws a white box over the content. Redaction deletes the text and images under the mark and draws a black box.
Can I remove a whiteout box later?
Yes. Select it and press Delete or Backspace before you download.
