Plan the garden once, on paper, and the spring is calmer. The left half of this landscape page is a plain squared grid for the plot itself: draw the beds, the path, the greenhouse and the water butt, number each bed, and mark the shade cast by a wall or a tree. Choose one-inch squares for a simple sketch, or half-inch squares, which print with every second line darker so an inch still reads as one unit when you need finer detail.

A scale line under the grid is left blank on purpose, because gardens differ: write one square equals one foot for square-foot beds, or one square equals one metre for a larger plot, and the drawing stays honest. The right half is a 19-row plant list with a bed number, the plant, the variety, the spacing, the sowing date and the expected harvest, so the sketch and the planting detail stay on one sheet instead of two.

The whole plant list is fillable, so you can type the varieties straight off the seed packets and keep the page tidy, then print it and draw the beds by hand with a pencil and a ruler. Print at 100% and the squares come out at their true size, which is what makes the plan measurable rather than decorative. Keep last year's sheet beside this year's and crop rotation becomes something you can see instead of something you try to remember. One landscape page, US Letter or A4.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose the grid

One-inch squares for a quick plan, half-inch squares when you want more detail. Then pick US Letter or A4.

  2. 2

    Set the scale

Write what one square stands for — a foot, a metre, half a metre — on the scale line under the grid.

  3. 3

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

  4. 4

Draw the beds, then list the plants

Sketch and number each bed on the grid, then fill the plant list with the variety, spacing, sowing date and harvest for each one.

The plot area is 5 inches by 6 inches. That is 5 by 6 squares with the one-inch grid, or 10 by 12 squares with the half-inch grid, which prints every second line darker.
Yes. All six columns across all 19 rows are form fields, so you can type varieties and dates in any PDF viewer. The grid itself is for drawing on by hand.
Yes. Use the one-inch grid and write "1 square = 1 foot" on the scale line; each square is then one planting square.
Print a sheet per bed and number them, or draw several beds on one grid and use the bed column in the list to say which is which.
Landscape, so the grid and the plant list sit side by side. Set your printer to landscape, or leave it on automatic — most viewers rotate the page for you.
