The list is split into sections that follow a supermarket round rather than the order things occurred to you: fruit and vegetables, bakery, meat and fish, dairy and chilled, deli, frozen, tins and sauces, pasta and dry goods, baking and spices, breakfast, drinks, snacks, household and cleaning, health and toiletries. Fourteen sections with five lines each, or ten wider sections with eight lines, depending on whether you shop for a household or for one.

Every line has a checkbox on the left, a writing line, and a narrow quantity box at the right, so two of something is written where you will see it at the shelf rather than guessed at. Tick the box as the item goes in the trolley and the unticked lines are what is still missing — which also makes the sheet work as a handover list if someone else is doing the shop.

There is no price column and no currency symbol anywhere on the page, so the sheet works in any country and does not pretend to be a budget. Both header fields and all seventy or eighty lines are form fields, so a standing weekly list can be typed once and reprinted. One page in US Letter or A4 — fold it in half and it fits a pocket.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose the layout

Fourteen narrow sections for a detailed shop, or ten wider ones with more lines each.

  2. 2

    Fill in what you need

Write the item on the line and how many in the narrow box at the right.

  3. 3

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

  4. 4

    Tick at the shelf

Mark each box as the item goes in, so what is left is what you still need.

Seventy lines in the fourteen-section layout, or eighty in the ten-section one.
A plain list is one column of lines. This is grouped by supermarket section, with a quantity box per line, so the route through the shop is built into the page.
Not in the PDF — the headings are printed. The ten-section layout merges several of them if your shop is laid out differently.
Neither. No currency symbol is printed anywhere, so you write figures in whatever currency you use and the sheet works in any country.
