School exercise books are not plain graph paper. They have a margin rule down the left for the teacher's marks and a header line at the top for the name, and this sheet reproduces both. The grid runs edge to edge and the red margin line is drawn on a grid line rather than between two, so your squares still count from the margin outwards: six squares in on 5 mm paper, five on quarter-inch, three on 1 cm - about 1.25 inches in every case.
Across the top there are three printed rules labelled NAME, CLASS and DATE, the way a worked exercise is usually headed, and the grid size and square count are printed small at the right-hand end. Every tenth millimetre line is drawn heavier on the 5 mm grid, and every inch on the quarter-inch grid, so you can count blocks instead of single squares when you are plotting or scaling a drawing.
The whole block is measured from the page rectangle and from the real millimetre or inch, then centred with equal left and right margins, so a page printed at 100% measures exactly 5 mm, 1/4 inch or 1 cm against a ruler. US Letter at 5 mm gives 39 by 49 squares; A4 gives 37 by 53. Print a class set and nobody has to rule a margin by hand.
