A knitted stitch is wider than it is tall, so a design charted on square graph paper comes out squashed on the needles. This sheet uses rectangular cells in the proportion of your gauge instead: 4 stitches to 5 rows per inch for worsted stockinette, 5 to 7 for DK, or 7 to 9 for fingering and sock weight. Draw a circle that looks round on the chart and it knits up round.

Each cell is set from the real inch, so the chart is also a size guide: at 4 and 5 the page holds 30 stitches by 49 rows on US Letter, at 5 and 7 it holds 37 by 68, and at 7 and 9 it holds 52 by 88. Every tenth line is heavier in both directions, which is how knitting charts are usually read — count blocks of ten stitches across and ten rows up rather than single cells.

Use it for colourwork and fair isle motifs, intarsia pictures, cable and lace symbol charts, or for sketching a yoke before you commit the yarn. The grid is centred on the page with equal margins and runs nearly to the edges, so you get the whole sheet to work on. It is a plain vector page with nothing to fill in on screen: print it, chart in pencil or coloured pencil, and keep the sheet with your pattern notes.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose the gauge proportion

Pick the stitch-to-row ratio closest to your swatch: 4:5 for worsted, 5:7 for DK, 7:9 for fingering.

  2. 2

    Pick the paper size

US Letter or A4 — the cells keep their exact proportion on both.

  3. 3

    Download the PDF

A full page of gauge-proportioned chart paper, free and without a watermark.

  4. 4

    Print at actual size

In the print dialog choose "Actual size" or 100% instead of "Fit to page", so every measurement on the sheet comes out exactly as labeled.

Because knitted stitches are not square. A stitch is wider than a row is tall, so cells in the same ratio as your gauge show the motif at the shape it will actually knit up.
On US Letter: 30 stitches by 49 rows at 4:5, 37 by 68 at 5:7, and 52 by 88 at 7:9. A4 gives a stitch or two less across and a few more rows.
Pick the closest ratio — 4:5 covers most worsted stockinette, 5:7 most DK, 7:9 most sock yarn. Small differences in gauge barely change the shape of a charted motif.
For single crochet the cells are close to square, so our graph paper suits it better. This sheet is proportioned for knitting.
No — there are no form fields. Print the sheet and chart by hand, or open it in a tablet note app and draw on it with a stylus.
