This is loose-leaf notebook paper as it comes out of a pack: light blue rules, a red vertical margin an inch and a quarter from the left edge, and a Name and Date header across the top. College ruling sets the lines 9/32 of an inch apart and fits 36 lines on a US Letter page; wide ruling sets them 11/32 apart for 30 lines and larger handwriting. Both measurements are the US school standards, taken from the real inch.

The holes option is what makes it usable in a binder. Turn it on and the sheet shows the three standard punch positions: circles 5/16 of an inch across, centred half an inch from the left edge and spaced exactly 4.25 inches apart, which is the US three-ring standard. Punch through the marks and the sheet goes into any binder squarely. Turn the option off for a clean page to staple or scan.

Use it when the printer is there and the notebook is not: handouts that students write on, extra pages for a binder, practice paper for an essay draft, or lined paper that matches the rest of a folder. The ruling runs edge to edge the way machine-ruled paper does, and the red margin gives the usual place for dates, question numbers and corrections. There is nothing to type into — this is paper for a pen.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose college or wide ruling

College ruling is 9/32 inch and fits more lines; wide ruling is 11/32 inch for larger handwriting.

  2. 2

    Decide about the punch marks

Show the three-hole positions if the sheet is going into a binder, or hide them for a clean page.

  3. 3

    Download the PDF

A full page of ruled notebook paper with the red margin, free and without a watermark.

  4. 4

    Print at actual size

In the print dialog choose "Actual size" or 100% instead of "Fit to page", so every measurement on the sheet comes out exactly as labeled.

9/32 of an inch, about 7.1 mm, which gives 36 lines on a US Letter page. Wide ruled is 11/32 of an inch, about 8.7 mm, and gives 30 lines.
The three-hole punch positions: 5/16 inch holes, half an inch in from the edge and 4.25 inches apart. Punch on the marks and the sheet fits a standard US ring binder.
Lined paper is a plain ruled sheet. This one adds the Name and Date header, the red margin at the standard 1.25 inches and the punch marks, so it matches loose-leaf from a pack.
The ruling does, but the punch marks are the US three-hole pattern. For a European four-hole A4 binder, choose A4 and turn the marks off, then punch with your own punch.
No, there are no form fields. If you need to type, use a word processor; this sheet exists to be printed and written on.
