Standard manuscript format is double spaced with one inch margins, which works out at roughly twenty-five lines and about two hundred and fifty words on a page. This sheet draws that page: one inch of white all round, twenty-five ruled lines spaced the way a double-spaced typescript sits, and a header with rules for the title or chapter, the author and the page number. It is for people who draft longhand and want the page they write to behave like the page they will later type.

Down the left edge, outside the writing area, every line is numbered, with each fifth number picked out in dark type. That turns vague progress into something you can count: you can see you are on line eighteen, and a note to yourself that a scene runs from line six to line twenty means something later. At the top right a bordered word count box is split into two cells, THIS PAGE and RUNNING TOTAL, to be filled in by hand when the page is done.

Twenty-eight and thirty-two line versions are there for smaller handwriting or for drafting closer to a finished page count. The rules are spread evenly between the header and the footer space, so whichever count you pick the lines fill the page without crowding the bottom. There is nothing to type into - this is a sheet for pen and paper. One page, US Letter or A4.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose the line count

25 lines for standard double-spaced manuscript, 28 or 32 if your handwriting is small.

  2. 2

    Download and print

US Letter or A4, with the margins, the line counter and the word count box already drawn.

  3. 3

    Print at actual size

In the print dialog choose "Actual size" or 100% instead of "Fit to page", so every measurement on the sheet comes out exactly as labeled.

  4. 4

Count the page when you finish it

Write the page total and the running total into the box at the top so you always know where the draft stands.

Roughly 250 if you write at the size the rules suggest, which is the long-standing manuscript estimate. The word count box is there so you can record what you actually wrote rather than guess.
The numbers run down the left edge outside the writing area, with every fifth one in dark type, so you can see how far down the page you are and refer back to a line later.
No. This one is meant for drafting by hand, so it carries printed rules rather than form fields - including the title, author and page lines in the header.
Yes. The one inch margins and double-spaced rules match what most handwritten essay guidelines ask for, and the page line lets you number your sheets.
