Three hexagon sizes cover most of what people print hex paper for. Small hexes have a 3/16 inch side and pack roughly 800 of them onto a Letter page — good for chemistry rings and fine quilt piecing. Medium hexes have a quarter-inch side and give about 440 per page, the usual choice for dungeon and overland maps. Large hexes have a 3/8 inch side and leave enough room inside each cell to write terrain, numbers or notes.
Orientation matters more than it sounds. Pointy-top hexes (a vertex at the top) are the classic tabletop and wargame layout, where columns of hexes line up vertically. Flat-top hexes (a flat edge at the top) are what most hex-crawl map tools and many board games use, and they stack in neat vertical columns instead. Both are drawn from the same side length, so a medium pointy-top hex and a medium flat-top hex are the same size.
The tiling is built from the real hexagon geometry — width is the side length times the square root of three — so every cell is regular and the whole block is centered on the page with equal margins. Only complete hexagons are drawn, which leaves the natural notched edge rather than a row of half-cut cells. The sheet is a plain vector page with nothing to fill in.
