Fillable PDF — type into the fields online or in any PDF viewer before printing.

Cash envelope budgeting only works if you know what is left in the envelope. Each block on this sheet starts with two fields — the category the envelope is for and the amount of cash you put in — and then gives you a twelve-row log with columns for the date, what you spent it on, the amount that came out and the balance remaining. The amount and balance headers are right-aligned and no currency symbol is printed.

Choose two envelopes to a page and each block runs the full width, which leaves a wide description column for longer notes. Choose four and the blocks sit two across and two down, still with twelve rows each, so one sheet covers a whole month of categories. Cut the blocks apart and tape or glue them to the envelopes, or keep the page whole in a binder.

Every cell is a fillable form field, so you can start the sheet on a computer — typing the categories and the starting amounts before you print — and then write the spending in by hand as the cash goes out. The design is plain: thin grey rules and a light lavender header, which prints cleanly on any home printer.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose how many envelopes

Two per page gives wider rows; four per page covers more categories on one sheet.

  2. 2

    Name the envelopes

Type the category and the cash amount at the top of each block, or leave them blank and write them in.

  3. 3

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

  4. 4

    Log every withdrawal

Each time you take money out, write the date, what it was for, the amount and the new balance.

You can. Each block is a self-contained unit, so cutting between them gives you a slip to attach to the front of a real envelope. Keeping the page whole works just as well in a binder.
