A sinking fund is money put aside a little at a time for something you know is coming: car tyres, the vet, Christmas, the annual insurance bill. This sheet runs four or six of them side by side across one page. Each column has lines for what the fund is for, the target amount, the date you need it by and what one block is worth, which is the target divided by twenty.

Under those lines is a tall bar of twenty blocks with Target reached printed at the top and a heavier rule after every fifth block, so the quarter marks are easy to see. Colour a block from the bottom up each time you set that much aside and the whole page becomes a picture of how your funds are doing next to each other, which is the point of keeping them on one sheet rather than on four separate ones.

At the foot of every column is a Saved line for the exact figure, and the header has fields for the month and the total you are setting aside each month. The money lines are plain, with no currency symbol printed anywhere. Choose six funds for a full household or four when you want wider columns and more room to write. The name, target, deadline, block value and saved lines are all fillable; the blocks are drawn to be coloured in.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose four or six funds

Six fits a full household on one page; four gives wider columns and more room to write.

  2. 2

    Name each fund

Write what it is for, the target amount and the date you need the money by.

  3. 3

    Work out one block

Divide the target by twenty and write that figure on the Block line, so you know what colouring one block is worth.

  4. 4

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. There is no watermark and no sign-up for your first 20 downloads each day; after that a free account keeps downloads going. You may print the file as often as you like for personal, school or business use.
Money saved in small regular amounts for a known expense that is not monthly: insurance, car servicing, school trips, Christmas. Saving a twelfth each month means the bill arrives with the money already waiting.
The fund name, target, deadline, block value and saved lines are form fields, along with the month and monthly amount at the top. The blocks themselves are drawn to be coloured in by hand or with a highlighter tool.
The fund's target divided by twenty, so each block is five per cent of that fund. Write the figure on the Block line and the column stays easy to read.
Print a second sheet. Six columns is as many as will fit on one page while leaving blocks big enough to colour in neatly.
None is printed, so the targets and amounts work in any currency.
