A landscape grid with the months across the top and a total column at the end. The first block is money in: sales of goods, services and fees, other income, a blank row for anything else and a total revenue line. The second block is money out, with eleven rows covering materials and stock, fees and commission, postage and packaging, software and subscriptions, advertising, travel, equipment and tools, rent or a pitch, other, a blank row and the total costs line.
The third block is two rows and the whole point of the sheet: the profit for the month, and the running profit for the year. Plenty of side businesses look healthy because money is coming in, and only show their real shape when the costs are listed under each other month by month. Filling in a column takes a couple of minutes and the comparison between January and July comes free.
Choose twelve months for a full year on one page or six for wider columns and bigger handwriting - useful for a seasonal stall or a business that started mid-year. The header records the business, what you sell and the year. No currency symbol is printed and no tax figure is involved; this is a plain profit sheet, which is also the number you will be asked for when the hustle grows up. Every cell is fillable, US Letter or A4.
