Most households keep two sheets on the fridge - what is for dinner, and whose turn it is to do what. This one puts both on the same page so they line up by day. Each of the seven rows is a day of the week: the left half holds breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the right half holds three ruled lines with a tick box for the chores or errands that belong to that day. A heavy rule down the middle keeps the two halves clearly apart.

Underneath the week there is a shopping list in two columns, eight items with tick boxes, so the ingredients you have just planned can go straight on it while you are still thinking about them. Saturday and Sunday are tinted, which makes the weekend easy to find when you are glancing at the sheet in passing, and the week can start on Monday or Sunday to match whichever calendar the household already uses. The day names are printed in full down the left edge.

Everything is fillable: the week-of line, all twenty-one meal boxes, the twenty-one chore lines and the shopping list. Type the week on screen if you plan ahead on a laptop, then print a clean copy for the fridge, or print it blank and let everyone write on it with a pen. It is one portrait page in US Letter or A4.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose the first day

Monday or Sunday, so the rows match the calendar you already use.

  2. 2

Fill in the meals and chores

Type the week in any PDF reader, or print the sheet blank and write it in.

  3. 3

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

  4. 4

Put it where everyone sees it

A fridge door or a kitchen noticeboard - the chores half only works if the people doing them can read it.
