This sheet asks the simplest question in early maths: how many are there? Twelve bordered boxes each hold a group of one shape, laid out in neat rows of five so they can be counted by pointing or by grouping. Under each box is the question and a bold square for the number. The shapes rotate through circles, squares, triangles, stars and diamonds in soft colours that still print clearly in black and white.

The range option sets how large the groups get. One to ten suits a first counting sheet and keeps every group to two rows; one to twenty pushes on to counting in rows of five, which is the start of counting in groups rather than one at a time. The groups are generated from the range, so the same choice always gives the same twelve boxes and a whole group can work from matching sheets.

The number square under each box is a form field, so a child can type the numbers on a tablet, or you can print the page and have them write by hand. Turn the answer key on and the PDF has a second page showing the same twelve boxes with the correct count printed in red, which makes checking a pile of sheets quick.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose the range

Count to 10 for a first sheet, or count to 20 once counting in fives is starting.

  2. 2

    Add the answer key

Turn the key on for a second page with every count printed in red.

  3. 3

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

  4. 4

    Count and write

Count the shapes in each box, then write or type the number in the square underneath.

Yes. The shapes have a dark outline and a pale fill, so they stay clear on a mono printer.
Yes, each number square is a form field. On a tablet the sheet can also be written on with a stylus in an annotation app.
No. The counts are mixed so the child really counts each group instead of following a pattern down the page.
The sheet is fixed for each range, so both ranges give you two different pages. Print them double sided to get a two-sided counting activity.
