The chart runs from millions down to ones, with the hundred thousands, ten thousands and thousands grouped under a Thousands heading and the hundreds, tens and ones under Ones, so the three-digit periods that give large numbers their commas are visible at a glance. Below the headings are eight blank rows, each a set of boxes that take one digit. Write a number in, read it back, and the place of every digit is obvious.

With the decimals option the chart continues past a marked decimal point column into tenths, hundredths and thousandths, which is the layout used for comparing and ordering decimals, lining up addition, and showing what happens to the digits when a number is multiplied or divided by ten. Without it the chart stops at the ones column and gives each whole-number place more width.

Every box is a form field, so numbers can be typed in before printing — useful for a worked example on the board or a filled starter for one group. Printed blank it becomes a reusable mat: laminate it, or slip it into a sheet protector and write with a dry-erase pen. The page is landscape and prints on US Letter or A4.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose the columns

Whole numbers only, or continue past the decimal point to thousandths.

Click any box and type a digit — handy for showing a worked number before you print.

  3. 3

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

  4. 4

Put each digit in its own column and read the number back using the period headings.
