Twenty-four subtraction problems fill one page in four columns of six, each written in column form with the larger number on top, a rule underneath and space to work. Pick single digits, two-digit or three-digit numbers. Every answer is a positive whole number, and the top of the page has a name, date and score line plus a short reminder of the method being practised.

The borrowing option decides how the numbers are built. Without borrowing, every digit on top is at least as large as the digit below it, so each column can be subtracted on its own. With borrowing, at least one column forces a regroup from the next place. At the single-digit level borrowing means crossing ten instead, so those problems take a single digit away from a number between 11 and 18, such as 15 - 8.

Answers can be typed into the form field under each rule, which makes the sheet usable on a tablet as well as on paper. Turn on the answer key and the PDF becomes two pages: the worksheet, then the same problems with every difference printed in red. The numbers depend only on the options you pick, so the same settings always give you the same worksheet.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose the numbers

Single-digit, 2-digit or 3-digit, and whether every problem should need borrowing.

  2. 2

    Decide about the key

Add the answer key page if you will be marking the sheet.

  3. 3

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

  4. 4

    Subtract column by column

Start with the ones; when the top digit is too small, borrow ten from the next column.

No. The top number is always larger than the bottom one, so every answer is a positive whole number.
A single digit cannot be taken from a smaller single digit, so that level crosses ten instead: the top number is between 11 and 18 and the bottom one is a single digit.
If you choose it, yes — as page 2 of the same PDF, with the same 24 problems and the answers printed in red.
Yes. Each problem has a text field under the rule; type into it in any PDF viewer and the answer prints like normal text.
Each combination of options gives one fixed sheet. For more practice, print the 1, 2 and 3-digit versions, or switch borrowing on and off.
