Long multiplication needs room, so this sheet gives nine problems in three columns of three, each with the two numbers stacked over a rule and three faint ruled lines underneath for the partial products and the total. The lines are light enough to write over and spaced to match the figures above them, which keeps the columns straight, because a crooked second line is the most common reason the method goes wrong.

Choose two digits times two digits for the first year of the method, or three digits times two digits once it is secure. The multiplier never ends in a zero, so both partial products are real work rather than a free line of noughts. The note under the title spells out the method, including the zero placeholder in the ones column of the second line.

The answer key is worked rather than stated: for every problem it prints the first partial product, the second partial product with its zero, and the total under a second rule, all in red. That lets a child find exactly where a wrong answer went astray instead of only learning that it was wrong. The key is the second page of the PDF, and the same setting always produces the same nine problems.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose the problem size

2 digits by 2 digits to start, or 3 digits by 2 digits once the method is secure.

  2. 2

    Add the answer key

Turn the key on for a worked second page showing both partial products and the total.

  3. 3

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

  4. 4

    Work down the columns

Multiply by the ones, then by the tens with a zero in the ones place, then add the two lines together.

No. This one is for paper or a stylus: the working lines are ruled, not form fields, because long multiplication needs digits placed in exact columns.
Each one needs three lines of working. Nine problems with real space beat twenty cramped ones.
Yes. It prints both partial products and the total under a second rule, so you can see which line went wrong.
No, so the second partial product is always genuine work.
Yes. The questions come from the options you choose, so a key printed today still matches a worksheet printed next term, and a whole class can work from the same page.
