Learning a word means more than copying a definition, so each block on this sheet asks for four different things. The heading bar holds the word itself and four tick boxes for noun, verb, adjective and adverb. Underneath, a ruled definition area sits above a second ruled area for a sentence of the child's own, and a tall box on the right is for a small drawing of what the word means.

The words option decides how many blocks fit on the page: two blocks give plenty of room for long definitions and big handwriting, three is the usual choice for a weekly word list, and four packs a full set onto one sheet. Each block is laid out the same way, so a child who has filled one knows what to do with the rest.

Everything except the drawing box is fillable: the word line, the tick boxes, the definition and the sentence. That means a teacher can type the week's words into the headings and print a class set with the rest blank. The sheet suits any subject with new terms, from reading groups to science vocabulary, and a second language where the drawing fixes the meaning faster than a translation does.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose how many words

Two for the most writing room, three for a weekly list, four to fit a full set on one page.

  2. 2

Type the words if you like

The word line and tick boxes are form fields, so a class set can be printed with the words already in place.

  3. 3

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

  4. 4

    Fill in each block

Tick the part of speech, write the definition in your own words, use the word in a sentence, then draw it.
