Each page gives thirty numbers in three columns of ten. Every number has an arrow pointing to a ruled line where the rounded answer goes, which keeps the page tidy and makes marking a straight read down the column. The line under the title restates the rule being practised, including that a digit of five or more rounds up, and there is a name, date and score line for the child at the top of the page.

The place option picks both the rule and the numbers. Nearest ten uses two and three-digit numbers, nearest hundred uses three and four-digit numbers, and nearest thousand uses four and five-digit numbers, so each setting gives genuine practice at that place value rather than the same numbers with a different instruction. No number is already a round one, so every question needs a decision.

Each answer line is a form field for working on screen. Turn the answer key on and the PDF becomes two pages: the worksheet, then the same thirty numbers with the rounded answers printed in red. The same place value always produces the same thirty numbers, so a key printed today still matches a worksheet printed next term, and a class can all work from the same page. Print at 100% and the three columns line up on US Letter or A4.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose the place value

Nearest ten, hundred or thousand; the numbers change to suit the choice.

  2. 2

    Add the answer key

Turn the key on for a second page with all thirty answers in red.

  3. 3

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

  4. 4

    Round each number

Look at the digit to the right of the place you are rounding to: 5 or more rounds up, less than 5 rounds down.
