Each sheet holds 24 addition problems in four columns of six, written one number above the other with a rule underneath and space below it, the way column addition is taught at school. The number size is up to you: single digits for first practice, two-digit numbers for second grade, or three-digit numbers once regrouping is secure. There is a name, date and score line at the top and a one-line reminder of the method under the title.

The carrying option changes the numbers themselves, not just the heading. With carrying, the ones column always adds past nine, so there is repeated practice at writing the carried ten above the next column. Without carrying, every column adds to nine or less, which is the right starting point before regrouping is introduced. The same options always produce the same 24 problems, so a whole class can download identical copies.

Each problem has a form field under the rule, so the sheet can be completed on a computer or tablet as well as on paper. Choose worksheet plus answer key and the PDF arrives as two pages: the worksheet first, then the identical problems with every sum printed in red for quick marking. Print at 100% and the columns stay aligned on US Letter or A4.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Pick the level

Choose single-digit, 2-digit or 3-digit numbers, and whether the problems should need carrying.

  2. 2

    Add the answer key

Switch the answer key on if you want a second page with every sum filled in.

  3. 3

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

  4. 4

    Work down the columns

Add the ones first, carry into the tens, and write the total under the rule.
