This is the fraction wall children know from the classroom. Nine bars of exactly the same length sit one under the other: the whole, then halves, thirds, quarters, fifths, sixths, eighths, tenths and twelfths. Every part is labelled with its fraction, and every row is named in the margin, so the sheet works as a wall chart and as something to point at while explaining equivalence.

Because the bars are the same length and drawn to scale, equivalent fractions line up down the page: one half sits exactly over two quarters, three sixths and six twelfths, and one third over two sixths and four twelfths. That makes comparing and ordering fractions a matter of looking rather than calculating, which is why the wall is usually introduced before any written method.

Choose the color version for a wall display or a workbook page, or black and white if you are printing a class set or want children to color the parts themselves. Cutting one copy into strips turns it into a hands-on set for laying fractions side by side; keep a second copy whole as a reference. There is nothing to type in — this one is a reference sheet, not a form.

How to use it

  1. 1

Choose color or black and white

Color for a display copy, black and white for a class set or for coloring in.

  2. 2

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

  3. 3

    Compare the rows

Look down the page to see which fractions line up: 1/2 with 2/4, 3/6 and 6/12.

  4. 4

    Cut a set of strips

Cut one copy along the bars to make strips you can lay side by side, and keep another copy whole.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. There is no watermark and no sign-up for your first 20 downloads each day; after that a free account keeps downloads going. You may print the file as often as you like for personal, school or business use.
A whole, halves, thirds, quarters, fifths, sixths, eighths, tenths and twelfths — nine bars in all, each one labelled.
Yes. Every bar is the same length and divided exactly, so equal fractions line up across the page when you print at 100%.
No. This sheet is a reference chart with no form fields. Print it and write or color on paper, or annotate it in a tablet app.
Yes. The color version laminates well as a desk mat or display; children can mark it with a dry-erase pen and wipe it clean.
They are rarely used at this stage and would make the labels too small to read. The nine rows shown cover the fractions in most primary curriculums.
