Young writers draw first and write second, and this page is built that way. The top of the sheet is a large bordered box for the picture, with a title line and a name line above it. Below the box are primary writing lines: a solid top line, a dashed line through the middle and a solid baseline, which is the ruling used for handwriting in the first school years.

The lines option sets how much writing the page expects. Six wide lines suit a child who is still forming letters, nine is a comfortable middle, and twelve gives a narrower ruling for a longer story once handwriting is steady. The picture box keeps the same share of the page in all three, so the sheet always looks like story paper rather than lined paper with a gap.

The name and title are form fields, so a teacher can type the story title or prompt and print a set for the class. The lines themselves are left for handwriting after printing, which is the whole point of primary ruling. The page prints at full size on US Letter or A4, and the line spacing comes out exactly as drawn as long as you print at 100%.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose how many lines

Six wide lines for early writers, nine for everyday use, twelve for a longer story.

  2. 2

Type the title if you want one

The title and name lines are form fields, so a prompt can be printed on every copy.

  3. 3

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

  4. 4

    Draw, then write

Draw the picture in the box first, then write the story on the lines underneath.
