Each sheet takes one family of units and works it in both directions. Length moves between kilometres, metres, centimetres and millimetres; mass between tonnes, kilograms, grams and milligrams; capacity between kilolitres, litres, centilitres and millilitres. Roughly half the questions go from the larger unit to the smaller and half the other way, so a child cannot settle into multiplying by a thousand every time.

The facts needed are printed in one line under the title, which makes the sheet usable as homework without a textbook or a chart on the wall beside it. Many of the quantities carry a decimal part, such as 4.25 kilograms or 2.5 kilometres, because real measurements rarely arrive as whole numbers and watching the decimal point move is the whole idea being practised. None of the answers needs rounding.

The twenty-four questions sit in two columns of twelve with the answer lines aligned down the page, so marking is a single read. Every line is a form field for working on a laptop or tablet. With the key turned on the PDF is two pages: the worksheet, then the same questions with the answers in red. The same unit family always produces the same twenty-four questions.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose the units

Length, mass or capacity; the conversion facts under the title change to match.

  2. 2

    Add the answer key

Turn the key on for a second page with all twenty-four answers in red.

  3. 3

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

  4. 4

    Move the decimal point

Multiply when you go to a smaller unit and divide when you go to a larger one, and check the answer looks sensible.
