Comparing numbers is easier when the symbol has a story, so this sheet uses the alligator that always opens its mouth toward the bigger number. A reminder band at the top shows the three cases worked out, then twenty pairs of numbers follow in two columns, each with an empty box in the middle for the child to draw the mouth or write the symbol.

The number range option moves the sheet through the school years: 1 to 20 for first comparing, 1 to 100 for two-digit numbers, and 1 to 1000 for three-digit place value where the hundreds digit has to be checked first. A few pairs on each page are equal, so the answer is sometimes the equals sign and the child cannot simply assume one side is larger.

Each box is a form field, so the symbols can be typed in on a computer or tablet instead of written. Turn on the answer key and the PDF has a second page with the same twenty pairs and the correct mouth drawn in red in every box, which is quicker to mark than reading twenty symbols on a worksheet.
