A story map gives a reader somewhere to put each part of a story while they are still reading it. This one starts with the story or book title, then two boxes side by side for the characters and the setting. A full-width box follows for the problem, which is usually the hardest part for a child to put into words and so gets its own space.

The middle of the page is three columns headed beginning, middle and end, for the events in the order they happen. Underneath, a final full-width box asks how the story is solved or how it ends. Every box is ruled with light lines so writing stays straight, and the headings are set in the same lavender bars used across the pdfty school sheets.

All ten boxes are fillable form fields, so the map can be typed up on a laptop for a book report or printed and written on in class. It works for a picture book, a chapter book or a film, and it makes a good planning sheet in reverse: fill the boxes first, then write the story from them. Print a fresh copy for each book and they stack into a reading record for the term.

Characters and setting first, then the problem, then the events in order, and finally how it ends.
