Fractions are set the way they look in a book: the numerator over a rule over the denominator, not written as a slash. Each question ends with an empty answer fraction, a rule with space above and below it, so the child writes a numerator and a denominator rather than a single number. That small difference stops the common habit of adding the denominators as well as the numerators.
Three settings cover the usual progression. Same denominator adds two fractions over a shared denominator and asks for the answer in its simplest form. Different denominators uses pairs whose common denominator is small and whose total stays under one, so no answer turns into a mixed number. Simplifying gives a fraction that is not in lowest terms and asks for the simplest form, with the highest common factor between two and seven.
Every answer is checked before it reaches the page: each one is in its simplest form and is a proper fraction. The two boxes of each answer are form fields, so the sheet can be worked on screen. Turn the answer key on and the PDF becomes two pages, the worksheet and then the same eighteen questions with the answers printed in red, which makes marking a glance down three columns.
