Most coin worksheets are useless outside the country they were drawn for. This one draws each coin as a circle with its value printed inside, using the values 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 that almost every decimal currency shares. The note at the top says that the number on a circle is what the coin is worth, so the same page works for cents, pence, eurocents, kopeks or anything else without a single picture needing to change.

There are ten problems a page in two columns, each a line of coins sorted from the largest value down, followed by a line beginning Total. The easy setting uses three or four coins from 1, 2, 5 and 10, which keeps totals under about thirty. The harder setting uses four to six coins and adds 20 and 50, so totals run up towards a hundred and the child has to group the coins before adding.

Sorting the coins from largest to smallest is deliberate: it teaches the habit of counting the big coins first and then adding the rest. Each total line is a form field, so the sheet can be worked on screen. Turn the answer key on and the PDF becomes two pages, the worksheet and the same ten piles with the totals printed in red.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose the difficulty

Easy uses three or four coins worth 1, 2, 5 or 10; harder uses up to six coins and adds 20 and 50.

  2. 2

    Add the answer key

Turn the key on for a second page with all ten totals printed in red.

  3. 3

    Print or fill it in

Print at 100% ("Actual size") so lines and boxes keep their exact spacing, or fill the form fields on screen in any PDF viewer.

  4. 4

    Count and write the total

Start with the biggest coins, add in the rest, and write the total on the line.
